Thursday Night Recap - U.S. Open

Lowest rounds in US Open history shot today by Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele. Scores are much lower here than originally expected.

Thursday Night Recap - U.S. Open

Hello members,

Well, I feel lied to. All I heard the last few days was how hard LACC was, how thick and penalizing the rough was, how sloped the fairways were, which would make it impossible to keep out of the rough, how long and hard the Par 3s were, and how fast and sloping the greens were. That all may be true, but my Lord, the scores were very low today. The broadcast said this was the lowest first round in the U.S. Open history. I highly doubt the USGA will keep it setup this easy for the rest of the weekend.

Onto some scores. Rickie Fowler posted the first 62 in U.S. Open history this morning. Then, Xander Schauffele matched it about an hour later. Wild.

Some other low scores:

  • Wyndham Clark - 6-under 64

  • Dustin Johnson - 6-under 64

  • Rory McIlroy - 5-under 65

This was the first opening round of the U.S. Open that did not include an 80. Some notable high scores were:

  • Justin Rose - 6-over 76

  • Joel Dahmen - 4-over 74

  • Tyrrell Hatton - 4-over 74

I’m holding out hope that tomorrow includes more bogeys, more pitch outs from the rough, and higher scores. Call me crazy, but I like seeing these incredible players struggle to score one week a year.

Weather

Another mild day in store for tomorrow. Some sun, some overcast with temperatures ranging from 61 to 73.

Updated Betting Odds

My pre-tournament picks:

  • Scottie Scheffler - +650 - 3-under 67. He seemed to putt better today, which if that holds true, I have a feeling he’ll be Top 3 at least.

  • Jon Rahm - +2000 - 1-under 69. Not bad and still in it.

  • Tommy Fleetwood - +250000 - rough. 3-over 73. Needs a lot of birdies to make the cut.
