Friday Night Recap - U.S. Open
Hello members,
Scores were a bit more US Open like today. The sun was shining majority of the day, which means the course could dry out a bit and become tougher through the weekend.
Rickie Fowler continued setting the pace. It feels like he’s made a ton of birdies (18 to be exact), a decent bit of bogeys (8), and a decent amount of pars (10). He retained his lead by shooting a 68 today to be 10-under overall. Can he get it done for his first major?! Would love to see it.
Wyndham Clark followed up his opening 64 with a 67 today and is 9-under for the tournament. Rory McIlroy shot 65-67 to be 8-under. Xander Schauffele shoots Even today to be T3 and two strokes behind Rickie.
The cut ended up being +2. Some players missing the weekend:
Justin Thomas - 14-over for the tournament - OMG 🙀
Jason Day - 9-over
Sungjae Im - 6-over
Keegan Bradley - 6-over
Adam Scott - 5-over
Max Homa - 4-over
Jordan Spieth - 3-over
Phil Mickelson - 3-over
Some people online have commented on the smaller crowd size this week so far. From what I can gather is the USGA limited tickets to 4,000 per day with the remaining ticket allocation to LACC members and corporate sponsors. This has caused the tickets on reseller markets to be like $500+ per day. Also, LACC isn’t necessarily designed to have large crowds, with its sloping terrain. Finally, and this is more an anecdote, but LA doesn’t really care about this tournament. They’re too busy doing anything else.
Moving day is here!

With a 62-68, he has tied the U.S. Open 36-hole scoring record 😳

Weather
A little warmer tomorrow with the high of 77 and low of 62. Should remain sunny with a few clouds with the course drying out a bit.
Updated Betting Odds
My pre-tournament picks:
Scottie Scheffler - +650 - he’s quietly in the top 10. Absolutely within striking distance. 5-under for the tournament.
Jon Rahm - +8000 - struggled a bit today but made the cut and still, technically, has a chance.
Tommy Fleetwood - +200000 - made the cut on the number.

13 of the last 20 U.S. Open winners had 16 or fewer birdies/eagles or better for the entire week.
Rickie Fowler made his 16th birdie of the tournament on his 30th hole. He's made 8 pars so far.

The 16th at LACC is the longest par 4 in US Open history at 555 yards. Min Woo just hit driver wedge for an easy birdie. (400+ yard drive)

Dear @USGA,
Please stop spending money on the distance debate and please direct all funds to buying VHS film of past US Open courses on how to get an over par winning score.
