Tournament Roundup - RBC Canadian Open

Nick Taylor drains a 72 foot putt on the fourth playoff hole over Tommy Fleetwood to keep the trophy in Canada!

Tournament Roundup - RBC Canadian Open

Hello members,

An incredible Sunday we saw. At one point, SEVEN players were tied for the lead. Scores were low again today and some players moved up a whole lot of spots. Examples are:

  • Eric Cole - 9-under 63 - 14-under for the tourney - moved up 18 spots

  • Tyrrell Hatton - 8-under 64 - 16-under for the tourney - moved up 10 spots

  • Chez Reavie - 7-under 65 - 7-under for the tourney - moved up 33 spots

  • Nick Taylor - 6-under 66 - 17-under for the tourney - moved up 7 spots

Speaking of Nick Taylor, he had bogeyed 16 and had to birdie the last two to take the lead with a few players, like Tommy Fleetwood, still on the course chasing. Taylor did just that, including an up-and-down for birdie that included a gnarly lie in the rough behind the green. He was hoping to hold on to avoid a playoff and needed Fleetwood to par out to accomplish that.

Tommy Fleetwood birdied 17 and was tied with Taylor going into the unique Par 5 18th. Tommy’s iron off the green found the right rough and then his second shot ended up in the rough too, short and right of the green on a severe side slope. As the broadcast said, “this just brought 6 (bogey) into play”. His approach landed on the backside of the green. Just a two-putt needed to force a playoff. He did just that and to the playoff we go!

In the playoff, Taylor and Fleetwood went back to the Par 5 18th. Taylor striped his tee shot right down the middle. Fleetwood hit a much better iron off the tee this time and found the fairway. Fleetwood’s approach with the “mini driver” ended up right of the green in the rough just above the green side bunker. Taylor didn’t hit his approach well at all and ended up with an awkward stance in and out of the bunker. Tough luck here. Taylor pitches it to five feet for birdie. Fleetwood pitches much further and will have a large right to left putt from about 20 feet. TOMMY DRAINED THE PUTT! Now, Taylor has to match him to go onto the second playoff hole. Taylor made his as well, and we go back to 18 again. As they were putting, some rain started coming down and could impact things here.

On the second playoff hole, Taylor ended up in the right rough with an okay lie off the tee. Fleetwood stripes an iron again to find the fairway. Fleetwood played first and hits it right into the grandstands. Luckily, he’ll get relief and a free drop. Taylor’s approach is in the fairway short and right of the green. Back to a pitching contest. Taylor’s pitch ends up about 25 feet short of the pin. Now, onto Tommy’s pitch, to which he hits it to about 11 feet left of the pin. Taylor two-putts so Tommy has a chance to win, if he makes it, which he does not.

Moving to the third playoff hole, which is the Par 3 9th. Both players were a bit short of the green and pin and putted from off the green. They both were up-and-in in 3 strokes so they move to the 4th playoff hole, which is the 18th again.

On the fourth playoff hole, Taylor’s tee shot ends up in the first cut and looks like it’s in a divot. Fleetwood hits his iron in the left bunker. Fleetwood lays up from the bunker and is fine. Taylor’s shot from the divot scooted up on to the front of the green and has 70ish feet for his putt for Eagle. Fleetwood has 85 yards from the fairway for his third shot. He hits it to pretty much the exact place where he was on the second playoff hole. He should know what that putt does. Taylor’s putt from 72 feet…

AND NICK TAYLOR DRAINS TO FOR EAGLE TO WIN! The first Canadian player to win the RBC Canadian Open since 1954! He takes home the $1.6m paycheck and keeps the trophy in Canada for the next year. What an incredible finish!

Now, we turn to the U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club. Major number three for the year.
