Tournament Preview - PGA Championship

Will Justin Thomas repeat? How will the weather hold up this week? Oak Hill is primed and ready to go for the second major of the year.

Tournament Preview - PGA Championship

Hello members,

Major season continues this week outside of Rochester, NY at Oak Hill Country Club East Course. Hope you all grab your garbage plates and celebrate appropriately this weekend.

Some storylines to watch:

  • The rough is THICK (twitter)

    • The course is long at 7,400 yards and is only a Par 70.

  • Can Justin Thomas go back to back?

  • Is JT wrong with his comments that a major venue in upstate New York in May is interesting? Supposedly it snowed not three weeks ago but four weeks ago. (instagram)

  • Will a LIV golfer break through for their tour’s first major championship?

    • Talor Gooch, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Cam Smith all playing well in the last few tournaments. Will it continue this week?

  • Will weather be a factor with temps ranging from upper 40s to mid 70s? Maybe some rain this weekend?

  • Missing Tiger this week so will ratings decrease?

Let’s get to the golf. Tee times start at 7am EST tomorrow on ESPN+.

Weather

Wind chills in the upper 30s and low 40s, rain, and some wind. Weather is going to be a factor this week and should play an impact in the scoring.

Where to Watch and Follow

The tournament socials can be found here for Twitter, Instagram, and their own website.

ESPN+ coverage from 7:00am - 1:00pm EST
ESPN coverage from 1:00pm - 7:00pm EST

Field

The full field was announced this weekend and can be found here. 156 players with all big names, except Tiger, playing. 17 LIV golfers included when last year there were 37. Choices have consequences I suppose.

  • Previous Winners in this week's field:

    • Justin Thomas - 2022, 2017

    • Phil Mickelson - 2021, 2005

    • Collin Morikawa - 2020

    • Brooks Koepka - 2019, 2018

    • Jimmy Walker - 2016

    • Jason Day - 2015

    • Rory McIlroy - 2014, 2012

    • Jason Dufner - 2013 (Oak Hill)

Betting Odds

Betting Odds provided by Bovada.lv at this link (not sponsored)

Some notable players to consider:

  • Jon Rahm - +800 - hard to bet against Rahm this year, think he goes 2 for 2 in majors in 2023.

  • Scottie Scheffler - +800 - also hard to bet against Scottie this year

  • Tyrrell Hatton - +3500 - been playing great this year and he has a chance to elevate to the top tier this week

Course Information

  • Oak Hill Country Club is a private country club in a suburb of Rochester, NY. The club is made up of two courses - East Course (where the tournament is this year) and West Course.

  • Famed golf course architect - Donald Ross - designed both the East and West courses back in 1901.

    • The East Course underwent a full renovation by Andrew Green that completed in 2019.

  • Oak Hill has hosted a ton of major championships:

    • U.S. Amateur - 1949, 1998

    • U.S. Open - 1956, 1968, 1989

    • Ryder Cup - 1995

    • PGA Championship - 1980 (Jack Nicklaus), 2003 (Shaun Micheel), 2013 (Jason Dufner)

  • The club is very exclusive with only 250 members.

  • Initiation fees are rumored to be $125,000 and annual dues between $15,000 to $20,000.

  • The East Course is known for thick rough, fast greens, fast fairways, and being very long. It’s 7,400 yards long and only a Par 70 so there are a lot of Par 4s around 500 yards in length.

Notes and News
