Tournament Preview - The Open Championship

Hello members,

Last major of the year this week outside Liverpool, England. The 151st Open Championship put on by the R&A. The Royal Liverpool Golf Club has hosted The Open twelve times before this week. The most recent were 2006, when Tiger Woods won by only hitting his driver once, and 2014, won by Rory McIlroy.

Speaking of Rory, can he finally get back in the Major winner’s circle after winning the Scottish Open last week and winning again at Royal Liverpool?

Will Cam Smith go back-to-back to give the LIV group two majors this year?

Can Scottie Scheffler find his putter?

Will Rickie Fowler stay hot and take home his first major?

Tee times start at 1:45am EST so I’ll see you all in a few hours. Let’s tee off!

Weather

Weather is always a factor for The Open. Thursday looks very pleasant while rain and wind are expected over the weekend. Should make for some fun links golf!

Betting Odds

Betting Odds provided by Bovada.lv at this link (not sponsored)

Some notable players to consider:

  • Scottie Scheffler - +800 - well, well, well, we pick Scottie again.

  • Rickie Fowler - +2000 - just because I want him to win a major. Oh, and he’s been playing better golf than in recent memory.

  • Jordan Spieth - +3500 - haven’t picked Jordan much this year since he is pretty wild, but he typically plays well at The Open, including winning in 2017.

Course Information

  • Royal Liverpool Golf Club was built in 1869 and its nickname is Hoylake.

  • The club has hosted The Open 12 times, with the 13th being this week.

    • Hosted in 1897, 1902, 1907, 1913, 1924, 1930, 1936, 1947, 1956, 1967, 2006, 2014

  • Hitting the fairway and avoiding rough and bunkers is imperative. Tiger only hit his driver once here when he won in 2006. Wouldn’t surprise me to see something similar this week.

  • The Par 3 17th is brand new and should be a great hole to watch.

  • The club is technically private but apparently the public can play? It’s hard to tell online, so not totally sure.
