Tournament Preview - The Memorial Tournament
Another $20m purse up for grabs at The Memorial. Jack's tournament always delivers and expectation are the same this year.
Tournament Preview - The Memorial Tournament
Hello members,
Another week, another designated event. This time in Dublin, OH for Jack’s tournament, The Memorial. The purse is $20m with the winner’s share being $3.6m. Majority of the big names are playing, with a few exceptions resting up, like Max Homa and Tony Finau. Reminder that players can miss one designated event without a penalty but any additional misses are penalized, like we saw with Rory McIlroy in Hilton Head.
Defending champ Billy Horschel is back to defend his title. Not betting him this week, but I am betting the 2021 and 2019 winner, Patrick Cantlay. Scottie Scheffler has been on a hot streak this year with top 10 finishes and a few wins so he’s a pick, also.
The Memorial is always one of the favorites on Tour. With it being Jack’s tournament, there’s always an aura about it and this week is no less. Excited to see the golf!
Weather
Nice summer-y weather this week in central Ohio. Highs in the low 90s and lows in the high 50s. A potential storm on Saturday so we’ll see if that occurs.
Where to Watch and Follow
ESPN+ coverage from 7:00am through 2:00pm EST
Golf Channel starting at 2:00pm through 6:00pm EST
Field
Another designated event so a pretty stacked field. Full field is found here. Some players are taking this week off before the U.S. Open in two week. Two notables missing are Max Homa and Tony Finau.
Previous Winners in this week's field:
Billy Horschel - 2022
Patrick Cantlay - 2021, 2019
Jon Rahm - 2020
Jason Dufner - 2017
William McGirt - 2016
David Lingmerth - 2015
Hideki Matsuyama - 2014
Matt Kuchar - 2013
Notable previous winners absent (cough cough LIV for some):
Bryson DeChambeau - 2018 (LIV)
Betting Odds
Betting Odds provided by Bovada.lv at this link (not sponsored)
Some notable players to consider:
Scottie Scheffler - +700 - if he can figure out his putting this week, no way he loses. Also, I’m just going to bet him every week it seems.
Patrick Cantlay - +1100 - 2x previous winner, 2021 and 2019
Viktor Hovland - +2000 - feel like he’s been close too many times to not get a win, it happens this week.
Course Information
Muirfield Village Golf Club is an upscale, private club in a suburb of Columbus, Ohio.
The club is one of two clubs to host both the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup.
It’s also hosted the U.S. Amateur and the President’s Cup.
Founded in 1974 by Jack Nicklaus, the club is named after Muirfield, Scotland, where Jack won his first of three British Open titles.
The surrounding area is home to Jason Day, who regularly plays and practices at MVGC.
The initiation fee is around $100,000 with monthly dues coming in between $500-$800 per month
The rough is known for being very thick and penalizing along with extremely fast greens, this tournament typically has a more reasonable winning score, around 10-under.
Notes and News
Jon Rahm had some comments on whether LIV golfers should compete in the Ryder Cup (he was for them competing) (twitter)
Rory McIlroy, on the other hand, disagrees with Rahm and thinks Brooks Koepka has earned the right to be on the US team but no European LIV player has (twitter)
Jack Nicklaus shared his thoughts on LIV (twitter)
Matt Wolff has been removed from Smash GC (twitter)
Funny story - professional golfer, JB Holmes, played in an event as John Bradley and had to drop from the $30,000 calcutta when he was found out (twitter)

Totally hypothetical but completely realistic:
Sam Bennett is now headed to the KFT for at minimum a year. Zero guaranteed money…..
What if LIV offered 25mm to him? That would be a hell of a decision for the young man….

2014, my first time playing Memorial, I get there the Sunday before. I hit some balls and head to the 1st tee for a practice round. Jack Nicklaus and his son Jackie are there and I get to say hello before they tee off. I was going to play behind them but the head pro comes up to… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…

Most people think a scratch golfer is good enough to play on tour lol they would have to give a scratch player at least 4 per side

The par 3s at LACC average 232 yards on the card. That includes a 124-yard hole.

This is an amazing idea!!!
Every public course should consider this. Would keep the kitchen and wait staff busy and ultimately allow more rounds to be completed.
Issue is when you get behind a slow group who doesn’t care. Would require a good marshall.

Not exactly sure what is going on here but something to monitor:
Smash GC has scrubbed Matt Wolff's handles off their Twitter bio and IG bio. 👀
(Wolff withdrew from LIV DC on Sunday)
