Came down to the 72nd and 73rd holes! Chris Kirk wins in a playoff
Tournament Recap - The Honda Classic
Drama on the 72nd hole and then playoff hole! Chris Kirk lead by one going in the Par 5 18th and smokes a drive down the fairway. He stands over his second shot at 252 yards out, hits his wood right at the pin but ends up about 6 inches short so the ball hits the rocks and goes into the lake, almost hitting the Honda SUV! Eric Cole is one back from Kirk and 250 out. He hits his second shot just off the green and gets up and down for a par. Kirk drops back in the fairway, hits his fourth shot to about 16 feet, and misses the putt for par to win! He makes his tap in to force a playoff with Cole. On the playoff hole, Kirk drives first to hit behind a tree on the right hand side. He punches out to about 120 yards. Cole clobbers a drive down the middle and has 250 out again. Cole hit his second shot too strong to the back bunker. Kirk hits his third shot to about 4 inches for an easy tap in birdie! Cole has to get up and down out of the bunker to force another playoff hole. He hits his bunker shot to about 10 feet and then lips out his birdie putt! DRAMA I TELL YOU, DRAMA!
Chris Kirk wins on the PGA Tour for the first time since 2015. He takes home $1.512m and had pre-tournament odds of +2800. Pretty good payday for him, and you if you bet him. He spoke about his sobriety after the win, and how he took a break from golf in 2019 after battling depression and alcohol abuse. Love a good comeback story!
Looks like this is the last year of the Honda Classic. A new sponsor will come for next year's event this week. Playoff to send it out in style. Next year, the field is promised to have bigger names, according to Jack Nicklaus.
Ryan Gerard was also a good story this week. Monday qualifier to finish solo fourth, take home $411k and a spot in the Puerto Rico Open next week. Keep playing well and could earn his card! Onto next week's Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill and Puerto Rico Open. Cheers!
Chris Kirk defeats Eric Cole on the first playoff hole to win @TheHondaClassic for his first @PGATOUR win since 2015.

Chris Kirk needed to finish T3 or better to keep his card at the Sony a few years ago. Took second that week. Major stones. Guy’s a sneaky gamer and closed that out like a boss. Been through a lot. Solid finish for the last Honda Classic.

It was easy to see that the top players playing the elevated events exclusively would be great for the elevated events. What’s interesting is that it might also be a great thing for the non-elevated events.

Jack Nicklaus on the future of the Honda Classic: "The Tour is changing next year, the schedule is different. The Tour has assured me whether we have a sponsor or not the tournament is going to be here ... the Tour is working w/ us to have a better date & a better field."
