Tournament Preview - Charles Schwab Challenge

Hello members,

After an exciting week in upstate New York, we’re heading back to Texas for the Charles Schwab Challenge at the famous Colonial Country Club. A good bit of big names are competing this week, so it should be a good week of golf.

Defending champion, Sam Burns, is back and ready to repeat. His current odds are +2500. Last year’s runner up, Scottie Scheffler, is the favorite at +450. Other notables are Tony Finau (+1600), Jordan Spieth (+1400), and Viktor Hovland (+1600).

Michael Block is also playing this week after receiving a special invitation. He’s been living the dream the last week, getting texts from his airness (MJ for those younger than 20) himself, getting offers for $50k for his 7-iron, and gaining like 200k Instagram followers. Although this is his 25th PGA Tournament, it feels like a turning of the page in his professional golf career and I, for one, am happy to see him be successful.

Onto to the golf!

Weather

Seems like it’s fully summer in Fort Worth, TX. Highs in the upper 80s and lows in the upper 60s with sun and clouds all week. Maybe some rain on Sunday but not likely at this point.

Betting Odds

Betting Odds provided by Bovada.lv at this link (not sponsored)

Some notable players to consider:

  • Scottie Scheffler - +450 - 2nd last year in this tournament and 2nd last week at the PGA Championship. Not a great payout but still hard to bet against him.

  • Sam Burns - +2500 - last year’s winner, feel like decent odds for him to repeat

  • Kurt Kitayama - +6000 - feels like a good week to get his 2nd PGA Tour win of the year. He played solid last week and can keep that momentum going.

  • While he’s not one of my picks, Michael Block’s odds are +20000 for anyone who’s wanting to take him.

Course Information

  • Colonial Country Club is a private club in Fort Worth close to the Texas Christian University. For 75 years, it was the best private club in the Dallas / Fort Worth area until Dallas National came about.

  • Built in 1938 by Perry Maxwell, the course is a Par 70 at 7,200+ yards.

  • The Texas wind is typically a big factor here.

  • Initiation fees are rumored to be around $80,000 and monthly dues around $500.

  • The Par 4 5th hole is the signature hole and often mentioned as one of the best holes in America. Picture below.

Notes and News

  • Viewership from last week’s PGA Championship was DOWN a good bit. I’m honestly not sure why, since it was an incredible event with big names everywhere (twitter)

  • TMRW Sports announced additional investors, including Justin Bieber and Darius Rucker (twitter)

  • Brooks Koepka’s coach, Claude Harmon III, ripped the media and PGA Tour in an interview (article)
