BREAKING NEWS - PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and LIV Golf merge to form a single golf entity.

Welp, there went my Tuesday with this news. If you're not on Twitter, you need to be and watch the reactions.

BREAKING NEWS - PGA TOUR, DP WORLD TOUR, AND LIV GOLF TOUR MERGE

Hello members,

As your group chat may have already told you, it is officially official that the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and LIV Golf merged to form a single golf entity. While further details are expected to come out, below (and linked) is the official press release from the PGA Tour:

My thoughts:

  • Nothing is changing this year as both Tours will operate independently. 2024 season is when some changes will / should come.

  • More details are coming on whether no-cut events will remain, so not going to speculate on that.

  • Personally, I think that Jay Monahan looks like an idiot here since he has said for almost two years that Saudi money is bad, every golfer who left the Tour is stupid and complicit in the bad Saudi money, and he was loyal to the PGA Tour players. In turn, he sold out since LIV had unlimited money and

  • If I’m a PGA Tour player and I’m finding out about this today, I’m not totally happy. They had to defend the Tour the last two years and say comments that maybe they believed and maybe they didn’t. Either way, it’s not a good look on the Tour in general.

  • In a perfect world, the combined entity would take the best parts of the PGA Tour and LIV to make the best Tour ever. In reality, we all know that won’t happen since it never does with a merger.

  • I am excited for more global events, but the viewing schedule will be tough in the States.

More information to come as it’s received. Look for an update in tomorrow’s Tournament Preview - RBC Heritage.

A few conspiracies floating around:

  • Did the PGA Tour want to avoid litigation and “opening their books”? (twitter)

  • Was this LIV Golf’s plan the whole time? Spend a bunch of cash, disrupt the PGA Tour, then merge to get all that cash back?

  • Apparently, Greg Norman didn’t know this was happening until Yasir called him before going on CNBC (twitter)

  • Rumor is LIV teams were struggling to get sponsors and offered the PGA Tour a ton of cash so win-win? (twitter)

  • Since Yasir is the chairman of the whole organization, is this the golden parachute Jay Monahan wanted? (twitter)

How PGA Tour Players are Reacting

Apparently, the news of the merger was found out on Twitter with the rest of the world. PGA Tour players aren’t handling the news well, since the PGA Tour touts itself as a “player run organization”…

LIV Players are rejoicing a bit

…and how can you blame them? They got paid bags, played a lighter schedule the last 2ish years, and now can get back to playing bigger events on the PGA Tour.

Rory must be pissed but maybe he knew something since his tone on LIV changed the last few weeks? Either way, he was put out there by the PGA Tour to defend it and now they merge:

Oh, and former President, Donald Trump, predicted this outcome 322 days ago:
